When you train to become a U.S. Marshal you will learn a variety of skills and things deemed necessary to help you once you have graduated from the academy with your career as a U.S. Marshal. This can include training in law, firearms, self-defense, driving techniques, courtroom procedure, surveillance, survival techniques, dealing with prisoners, first aid, and a few others. The Service Training Academy of the U.S. Marshals is located in Glynco, GA. There are different standards of fitness that will need to be achieved during the academy, and those standards can be found on their website as well.

Qualifications Needed To Become A U.S. Marshal

The first and perhaps the most obvious requirement that you will need is to be a U.S. citizen, but there are also a few others that you might not immediately think of:

When Do They Usually Hire?

The U.S. Marshals don’t hire as often as you might think, and at the time of this article they are not currently hiring. But, you can still make sure that you are meeting all of the qualifications that you need, and wait until they are hiring. They keep an updated page on whether or not they are currently hiring on their website. Keep checking that page whenever you get the chance to be the first to know when they are hiring.

How Long Does The Hiring Process Take?

The hiring process to become a U.S. Marshal can take anywhere from nine to twelve months. It really depends on the assessment situations and how long it takes you to meet the necessary qualifications as well. Those that are in the military or in college, must only apply if they can attend the academy within 160 days of when they first applied. There are maps that you can find on their website as well that will show you where the nearest USMS office is.

Which Location Will I Be Assigned To Work At As A U.S. Marshal?

There are 94 districts within the continental United States that new deputies can be placed within. It really depends on the need that the U.S. Marshals have at that time. Once placed at your initial station for duty, you will have to stay there a minimum of three years. There are certain commitments and agreements that you will sign off on before you begin this assignment.
