How To Become A State Trooper

If you become an officer of the law and a state trooper, you are making one of the biggest decisions of your life. It is one of the most rewarding careers that you can find, but not everyone is going to be the right kind of person for the job. There are a lot of benefits and a nice annual salary that go along with being a state trooper, and we have put together a list of things you need to accomplish in order to become one.

 

Police officers are always going to have higher expectations, and because of that you have to decide if you have what it takes to become a state trooper. You should be an honest person, be responsible, and have good judgment. You have to be able to put yourself in front of someone that you are protecting and put their lives first. There are also pressure situations in which you will have to make life and death decisions that could affect a lot of people.

Education Needed to Become A State Trooper

In order to apply to be a police officer, you first have to have a high school diploma. Usually you will need at least some degree of college education, or you can have military experience if you went that route after high school. There are lots of programs that are offered by colleges that can get you the training you need to meet most states requirements. If you know any other languages besides English, you will have a huge advantage.

There will be a test that you will have to take and pass to be considered for employment that will be given by the police department that you are applying to. If you have any doubts about passing the test, there are plenty of companies out there that can help you with studying and passing the test. After you have taken the civil service exam, the next step is to pass a variety of other requirements before you can be considered for employment. These include:

  • Passing a physical fitness test
  • Passing a background check
  • Passing a lie detector and drug test
  • Then there will be a series of interviews to determine if you are right for the job

After you have made it through all of that, it is time to move onto the police academy. These are usually state or regional academies. There you will receive a variety of training in law, investigation of accidents, and civil rights.
