Salary of an Illinois State Trooper

An Illinois state trooper’s base salary in the first year is $57,708. While at the police academy, the trooper can earn $2,673 in a month. That is paid semi-monthly. The salaries will increase with the number of years of service. When the trooper gets promotion in rank, he gets a raise in salary, too. The cadets in training get personal health and dental insurance at nominal costs, and basic life insurance and vision coverage for free.

 

The pension benefits or retirement program is very good. The troopers can retire from the Illinois State Police if they are 50 years old with 25 years of service OR 55 years old with 20 years of service. The maximum retirement payment is 80% of ending salary. The troopers who have worked for 26 years plus 8 months can get that.

The state troopers receive paid vacation, sick leave, and overtime pay. When he works longer, he gets additional paid vacations.

There are ample career advancement opportunities. The troopers are eligible for promotion after completing the probationary period. As to how far they can get promoted, it depends on their score in the tests, as well as their work performance.

In order to apply for the Illinois state trooper position, you need to meet with some pre-employment requirements.

You must be at least 21 years old. You must not have any felony conviction in the past or present. You must be a United States citizen, not just a resident or green card holder. You must have a valid driver’s license. You must be willing to work in any location within the state of Illinois.

There is a threshold on the education level. If you have a bachelor’s degree, you don’t need anything else. But if your educational qualification is lower than that, you will have to meet other requirements such as military service experience, work experience, etc.

The recruitment process consists of an orientation session, the fitness test, and the written test. Both of the tests are mandatory. The applicants who complete this process successfully are eligible to take part in the next phase, the selection process. The selection process includes the background investigation, the oral interview, and the certification. The background investigation is thorough and complete. It checks everything, such as education, employment, traffic, criminal history, credit history, etc. The oral interview is long. It takes 1.5 hours to complete.
