Salary of a Florida State Trooper

Florida state trooper is also known as the Florida highway patrol. They are given good salaries and benefits. The starting salary of a trooper is $33,977 of the first year. But the starting annual salary is $38,977 for the new troopers in Broward, Collier, Lee, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties.  If you calculate monthly salary based on this, they are $2,831 and $3,248, respectively. The troopers with university degrees get extra payment.  If the troopers work overtime, they get overtime pay, too. The new recruits in training academy get $2,515 a month.

 

State troopers benefit from medical, life, and dental insurance plans. There are paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, and maternity leave. They also receive a dry cleaning allowance. The state-paid retirement plan is awesome. The troopers in Florida who retires after 25 years of service get 75 percent of salary, as the pension. The troopers don’t need to pay state income tax.

The Florida state troopers have nice career advancement opportunities. Troopers are eligible for a promotion to Law Enforcement Investigator I (Corporal) after working for two years, and Sergeant after five years.

Florida state trooper is one of the most rewarding law enforcement career opportunities. Now I will introduce to you the basic requirements for being a Florida state trooper.

The applicant’s age must be 19 years of age or older and must be a U.S. citizen. The applicant must have good vision. The vision acuity must be at least 20/30 corrected. He must have normal color vision. The applicant must have a high school diploma or GED. Because he needs to drive law enforcement vehicles on duty, he must have a valid driver’s license. Applicants must be willing to accept tasks in any city in Florida.

There are study or work experience requirements, too. The applicants must possess: one year working experience in law enforcement area, OR two years of U.S. military service, OR two years of public contact working experience, OR 30 semester-hours or 45 quarter-hours class study time in an accredited college or university.

The troopers who pass all the preliminary selective process will receive 30 weeks of police academy training. The training location is Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy. During the training, the recruits get a monthly salary of $2,515. They would live in the academy. But they will purchase the training uniforms when they arrive at the academy.
