How Much Does A New Jersey State Trooper Make?

A state trooper is a state police officer. State troopers enforce laws on state and federal highways, prevent crimes, and assist in local police jurisdictions. They are armed to protect themselves and communities. State trooper is one of the highest paid jobs in government; therefore, it’s the most sought-after position, despite its inherent hazards. This article gives a brief introduction on the salary of state troopers in New Jersey, and some information on the job qualifications.

 

The starting salary of a trooper is $62,403. It’s raised to $69,489 in the second year. Every year, the trooper’s salary increases in steps until it reaches the top pay of $108,847. The new recruits are paid $778 every two weeks during their training period. Room and board are provided while training.

Additional compensations include overtime pay, paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, and medical insurance. There are 12 paid holidays a year. Health benefits include 2 options for medical coverage, 2 options for dental coverage, a prescription drug and a vision care program. Under the prescription plan, the trooper himself, along with his spouse and children, only need to spend the co-payment of $10 for virtually all prescription drugs, and only $3 for general drugs. Vision care program provides a partial reimbursement for the expense of eye glasses, contact lenses, and eye examinations. All state troopers are covered by a group life insurance policy. They must retire at the age of 55 except the Superintendent. Pension plan is available for retired troopers.

Qualifications for applicants:

To apply for a New Jersey State Trooper position, you have to meet the minimum requirements. These requirements include education, age, citizenship, driver’s license, background investigation, and medical and psychological tests.

A candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, or possesses at least 90 credits and is able to get the degree before he takes written examination.  If the candidate only has an associate’s degree, or 60 college credits, he must have at least 24 months’ employment or military service. If the candidate only has 30 college credits, he must have 24 months’ active military duty service with an honorable discharge.

The candidate must be at least 21 years old and must not reach his 35th birthday prior to the graduation date of the state police’s academy training. The candidate must be a United States citizen and he must have a driver’s license.

Then the candidate will go through the background investigation process. The purpose of the investigation is to make sure he has sound moral character, responsibility, reliability, dependability, and ethical purity. Medical examination and psychological evaluation are carried out later to ensure the candidate is fit for the job.

The candidates have to pass the selection process called Physical Qualification Test. It consists of 75 yard pursuit run, push-ups, sit-ups, and 1.5 mile run. All these items are timed tests. Candidates are required to pass a written examination, too.
