Delaware State Trooper Salary

The salary of a Delaware state trooper is very competitive. They earn $44,527 during the academy training. It’s raised to $50,375 after the training. The retirement plan is awesome. The troopers can retire after 20, 25, or 30 years of service. They get a pension of 50%, 67%, and 85% of salary, respectively. They must retire at the age of 55. The troopers and their dependents benefit from a state-share health insurance. The insurance plan also includes a medical or child care program. Troopers enjoy paid vacation and sick leaves. In Delaware, the troopers can get college tuition assistance.

 

The state troopers have a variety of duties and responsibilities. For example, they direct traffic, assist stranded or disabled motorists, and make arrests when necessary. The duties are not just related to traffic. They may respond to bank alarms, check buildings for burglaries, or interview witnesses, etc.

If you are interested in the career choice, you can start applying now. But you have to make sure you meet with the preliminary requirements. The basic requirements are the same with those in every other state.

First, you must be a United States citizen. Green card holders cannot apply. You age by the date of application should be between 21 and 39 years old. You must have a high school diploma or GED. Besides that, you must have attained at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits from an accredited college or university. If you have two years of active military service experience, you are only required to have 30 college credits.

Second, you must have a driver’s license. Because you need to drive law enforcement vehicles on duty, you should have at least one year of driving experience, too.

Third, the Delaware State Police will check your criminal record. Any past felony criminal charge is an automatic disqualification. If you used drugs in the past two years, you cannot apply.

Fourth, you must have good hear and vision. Your visual acuity level should be at least 20/40 uncorrected and 20/20 corrected, in each eye. You must have normal color vision.

In the selection process, the potential candidates have to pass the written examination and physical ability test. The written examination measures your various mental abilities, such as memory, visualization, written expression, etc. The physical fitness test consists of push-ups, sit-ups, and 1.5-mile run.
