Customs Agent Salary

There are two categories in which new hires are put into, either GS-5 or GS-7, depending on the experience and qualifications of the potential employee. The GS-5 category means that you will make around $28,000 to $36,000 a year. The GS-7 category means that you will make around $35,000 to $45,000 a year. The education of the individual applying will be a major factor in determining which level they are going to be hired at

 

A customs agent is working directly for the treasury department. There job is to enforce the laws that were put in place when it comes to the importing and exporting of shipments, luggage, people, cars, and a variety of other things that come in and out of the United States. There are instances when a customs agent will have to deal with illegal smugglers trying to get illegal items into the country, and there are also cases in which customs agents will have to make sure that people themselves aren’t illegally coming into the country. Some cases will require you to work undercover in order to make the arrests.

People that wish to make a career as a customs agent will have to be a U.S. citizen, and be a minimum of 21 years old. They will also have to pass physical tests and written tests, and pass an extensive background check as well. Last but not least, they will need to achieve a bachelor’s degree in a related field too. Then they can move on to the training that is going to finally take them to their destination as a customs agent.
