State troopers are the police force on the front lines. They protect U.S. residents from large and small dangers every day. But it’s a challenging career, too. In order to be a Connecticut state trooper, you need to meet with the different requirements and pass through a series of rigorous tests.

First, you have to be 21 years or older. Maximum age limit is 39 years old by the time of application. And you must be in good shape, without any obvious condition that may hamper the performance of patrol duties. You must have a high school diploma or a GED (General Education Development Certificate). If you hold a college or university degree, it’s much better. Only US national can apply.

Second, you have to pass the criminal history check. Anything beyond a minor misdemeanor will disqualify you. You must have not been convicted of a traffic offense in the past three years. You must have a driver license, and the license should not be in a state of suspension.

Third, your vision acuity level should be at least 20/100 uncorrected and 20/20 corrected in each eye.

Fourth, you will be asked to pass the physical fitness test. The physical fitness test includes push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.

Fifth, you go through polygraph examination, background investigation, physical examination, and psychological test.

However, there are several automatic disqualification factors. For example, if you have ever committed any offense involving domestic violence or controlled dangerous substance, or you have violated anyone’s civil rights, or have been convicted of driving while intoxicated, you will be eliminated from the candidates list.

After passing all of the tests, you become a trainee in the police academy. The training lasts approximately 25 weeks. The recruits live in the academy. The training includes physical training, self-defense, using firearms, swimming, and driving.

When the police academy training is finished, you can start working as a state trooper.
