Colorado State Trooper Salary

Colorado state troopers execute the duties of patrolling the highways to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers. They stop the law-breaking drivers and investigate highway crimes. The state troopers are members of Colorado Department of Public Safety. Therefore, it’s the same institution which recruits them and pays them. They earn decent salaries and get good benefits. Generally, salary depends on their experience.

During the academy training period, the troopers, or cadets at this time, earn a starting salary of $3,598 a month, and the maximum salary at this stage is $5,114. It applies to the field training stage, too. The 11-week field training comes after the 22-week academy training.  After the field training, the cadets become state troopers. They earn a starting salary of $4,167, a month. The maximum pay at this time is $5,920. They did not get the $100 monthly uniform allowance in the training period, but now as they are employed, they can get it.

As in most businesses, the salary is also related to their ranks, or positions. For example, a corporal earns $4,380 a month in the beginning, and it’s topped at $6,225. They get $100 uniform allowance, too. A sergeant earns minimum $4,930 and maximum $7,008.

The uniform allowance is one of the several benefits provided by the state. The troopers can also benefit from paid holidays, paid sick leave, and health, life, and dental insurances. They also benefit from a retirement program, which guarantee their financial security in the elderly days.  There are three conditions for retirement. Troopers can retire if they have served for 30 years, or reach age 50 with 25 years’ service, or reach age 55 with 20 years’ service.

Before you apply for the position, you should understand the qualifications and duties. State troopers enforce traffic laws on highways and perform a variety of other duties such as apprehending unlawful drivers, investigating traffic accidents, recovering stolen vehicles, assisting local police during emergencies, and preventing crimes. Now I introduce the basic requirements.

There are 4 items of minimum requirements. The applicant must be at least 21 years old. They must have a high school diploma or a GED. To be a Colorado state trooper, the applicant may not necessarily be a United States citizen, but he must be a permanent resident. He must have a driver license valid in the State of Colorado.

The applicant will be checked for integrity, drug behavior, alcohol behavior, criminal behavior, and driving history. Any problem in those categories may result in an automatic disqualification.
