Alaska State Trooper Salary

In Alaska, the police officers’ base salaries vary with geographic location. For example, according to a survey 5 years ago, the average salary in Sitka and Ketchikan was $4,059. It was $3,771 in Anchorage, Palmer, and Soldotna. And it was $3,912 in Fairbanks. The present average starting salary of a state trooper recruit is $4,535 per month. If he holds a 4 year college degree, his starting salary is $4,705 per month. There’s the salary for state trooper laterals. A state trooper lateral means the certified law enforcement officer with minimum one year of experience. Their salaries are $5,254 per month. If they hold a 4 year college degree, they earn $5,451 a month.

The state trooper is one of the most sought-after positions because of its decent pay and huge benefits. The benefits include paid leave and holidays, life and health insurance for the trooper and his family, and an excellent retirement pension system. It’s called PERS (Alaska Public Employees’ Retirement System). This public retirement plan provides the retired troopers with financial security during their retirement years.

Now I introduce the basic requirements for becoming a state trooper in Alaska. Before you apply to be an Alaska state trooper, you should check yourself for the minimum requirements.

You must be a citizen of United States of America. Your education level must be above high school graduate, i.e. you should hold a high school diploma or a GED certificate. You must be 21 years of age or older.  A driver’s license is necessary because you will have to drive law enforcement vehicles on duty. A background investigation will be conducted to check your criminal records. A felony conviction will automatically disqualify you from the position.

All candidates have to pass a physical fitness test including push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. Any applicant who failed in the test is not allowed to retake the test. They have to try again in the next recruitment cycle.

The state troopers who pass the initial selection process will be trained. They are taught how to perform duties in the areas such as first aid, criminal law, administration of justice, riot control, traffic operation, etc. Of course they will go through physical training to enhance strength and stamina. They will also receive training on how to arrest, how to use batons, guns and other specialized police equipment. They will be trained in offensive and defensive martial arts tactics.

If you are sure about yourself, and have full confidence that you are capable of being a state trooper, just go for it. Although it’s a reach, it’s obtainable.
